Capital Punishment – Right or Wrong?

I have been thinking a lot recently (dangerous I know), about the amount of violent crime that seems to be occurring in the UK.

There are two ways of looking at this – either I am becoming more aware of these as I get older, or they are on the increase – either way something surely needs to be done.

Before I go into my opinions on the situation I thought I would share a few links to get you thinking. All the links are from the BBC News website simply because this was the first to provide a suitable link through  Google and I kept with it to remain consistent.

Teenager stabbed to death on Oxford Street, Boxing Day 2011

Four people found shot dead at a house in Horden

Boy killed by Bus after being chased for his phone

There are plenty more I could have used. With regards to the top one you can even find videos of the Paramedics working on Oxford Street, however I see that as a bit distasteful so will allow you to do your own search should you so wish.

“So oaf…..” I hear you ask, “….what are you getting at?”

Basically I don’t see the current justice system as a big enough deterrent for this type of crime. Now I could go into who to blame – ranging from the Govenment, to the parents – but I would rather look at where we go from here.

Current solution:

In recent days two people were found guilty of the murder of Stephen Lawrence, both were sentenced to life with a minimum term stipulated for both of them.

So, in the briefest of terms, these two ‘beings’ – I will come back to this later – have been found guilty of taking a life and as punishment they will be sheltered, fed and possibly educated for at least the next 14- 15 years of their lives, oh and it will cost them naff all as it will be paid for by UK tax payers.

It may be for longer, if denied parole they will be there for life and will eventually die.

After doing a quick search I found an interesting article on The Guardian website entitled ‘The real cost of prison’

So not only do I not see prison as the right punishment, it also costs a ridiculous amount of money in a world living through a credit crunch.

I watched a a video a while ago, around the time that Bin Laden was found, on YouTube by Ken Burton – I have had a quick look for the video and couldn’t find it but here is a link to his website instead. In the video Ken discusses his thoughts that there should a world court that can determine someone ‘inhumane’, in which case this individual would lose all of their human rights. I believe he referred to people such as Gaddafi and Bin Laden, meaning they could be assassinated without recourse. I must admit that when someone goes to such extremes to breach human rights then I agree, they should have their rights taken away and become a ‘being’ not a human-being.

With regards to capital punishment, I am of the opinion that this should be put back in UK law. According to Wikipedia – the last executions in the United Kingdom, by hanging, took place in 1964, prior to capital punishment being abolished for murder in 1969. Although not applied since, the death penalty remained on the statute book for certain other offences until 1998. Obviously how these sentences were handed out would need serious considerations but surely the world would be a better and safer place if certain individuals ceased to exist……

When it comes to news such as this I think the perpetrators should be put in stocks in a very public place and left for the public to do as they wish……..

Bit of a morbid view maybe but I would welcome all opinions below.

Holiday – Free Kids, or is it?

Myself and my girlfriend didn’t get to go on holiday this year, mainly due to the fact that we were expecting our 2nd child; this led to us needing to save money. Last year we went on holiday but the journey to our destination took less than an hour…….not a ‘proper’ holiday really.

The last major holiday we went on was to Egypt in 2009, it was the 2nd time we had been but the first time we got to see the pyramids – brilliant!! So by the time we go on this holiday it will be over 3 years since our last and boy do I need it.

So a few months ago we walked into a travel agents (who will currently remain unnamed) all excited and ready to discuss holiday options. The good thing about booking a holiday more than a year in advance is that firstly you can spread the cost and secondly you are more likely to get one of the ‘free kids places’ they advertise.

The girl we dealt with seemed very helpful, certainly nothing like Carol Beer anyway :)

We asked her about the free kids places as we were pretty open minded about where we went, we were just looking for some sun and relaxation while ensuring there were also activities for the kids. The lady took us through various options and gave us prices based on the ‘free kids places’ and eventually we came to our decision. We booked the holiday there and then and the countdown began.

When booking you obviously need to give the names of the individuals attending the holiday, however we didn’t know the gender of our baby at this point, let alone the name. This was fine as we were told that they would put the name as ‘Infant 1′ and that we could simply come in and change the name once we had the details.

—-FAST FORWARD—-

After our baby was born we went into the travel agents, we paid another instalment and asked them to put the correct name on the booking. The individual, this time a gentleman, that we dealt with said that he would need to speak to someone on the phone to get this changed but as this could take some time we could go and he would do this without us having to wait.

The following month, as with most months, pay day arrived and so we took another trip to the travel agents to pay some more onto the balance. While we were there we asked if the name change had been actioned………it had not. The girl that we dealt with said that she would get it done and would give us a call when she had done so, which she did and the name was changed. She made of bad service into a good one, great customer care.

Then we receive a price breakdown in the post, confirming the name change. The was the first breakdown we had received as the initial booking just confirmed the total price. So, there it was in black and white……..the ‘free kids’ place was costing more than £600!?!?!?!

They had charged us for the name change also, but this had been taken off, however on further investigation we have been told that they only took this off because it wasn’t dealt with the first time we asked……meaning if it had been they would have charged us!!

When questioning the branch about it, so far we have been told “you knew the total price” which isn’t really helping. Anyway it was left that the girl would need to speak to her manager and would call us back that day………this still hasn’t happened!

Will continue the pursuit and will let you know how it goes! If not next stop may be ABTA or Trade Standards.

Wish me luck
